BRUNSWICK — A summer tradition returned this week.

The first concert in Brunswick Downtown Association’s Music on the Mall series happened Wednesday night and featured the Big Chips Trio, a folk-rock blues band.

According to Dee Perry of the Brunswick Downtown Association, the Music on the Mall series started in the early 1970s and has provided a venue for local musicians to play to anywhere between 200 to 400 people.

“It’s really a time-honored tradition here in Brunswick,” Perry said. “People come from away, local people kind of expect it and it’s always really awesome music. I’ve talked to people from away and they always plan to come to Music on the Mall if they are in town.”

Perry said BDA typically chooses musicians from a pool that has been well received in the past, but also likes to bring in new acts to change things up.

“It’s a matter of bringing people back and trying to integrate a few new acts (every year),” she said.

The concerts take place in the heart of the downtown on the Brunswick Mall and are free to the public, supported by the donations of local businesses. Bands take the stage from 6-8 p.m. and, in the case of rain, concerts take place on Thursdays.
