CUMBERLAND — Longtime Town Councilor Stephen Moriarty defeated Joseph Kumiszcza 3,958 to 1,993 Tuesday in the election for Maine House District 108.

District 108 includes Cumberland and a portion of North Yarmouth, as well as Chebeague Island and Long Island. The seat became available when Rep. Meredith Strang Burgess, R-Cumberland, decided not to seek re-election.

Moriarty, a Democrat who is chairman of the Cumberland Town Council, received 3,085 votes in his home town, 499 in North Yarmouth, 248 on Chebeague Island and 126 on Long Island, compared to Kumiszcza’s respective tallies of 1,634, 260, 43 and 56.

“I’m extremely humbled and honored by the Cumberland vote,” Moriarty, 62, said Tuesday night. “I look forward with great anticipation to serving the residents of Cumberland and District 108 in the upcoming session of the Legislature.”

He said the outcome was a reflection of the years of service he has dedicated to the Cumberland, “and the way in which my service has been perceived by a great many of the residents.”

Kumisczca called his campaign “a fun experience,” noting that he was going up “an extraordinarily popular opponent, so I was the underdog from the beginning.”

Republican Kumiszcza, 56, is president of Online Associate, a marketing firm he founded in 2008. He is also executive director of TechMaine, an online community for Maine’s technology sectors.
