The regular season is in the rear-view mirror in all sports and while cross country is down to its final act, the field hockey, volleyball, football and soccer drama is poised to continue.

Here’s a glimpse at what you might have missed and a look ahead to another exciting week:

Cross country

Brunswick’s boys’ cross country team took first first place at the Class A North regional championships Saturday in Belfast. The Dragons had 53 points, as did Hampden Academy, but they won a sixth-runner tiebreaker. Brunswick was led by Will Shaughnessy, who completed the five-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 19.14 seconds. Mt. Ararat (67 points) came in third, also qualified for the state meet and produced the individual champion, Lisandro Berry-Gaviria (15:49.63). 

In the girls’ meet, won by Camden Hills (49 points), Mt. Ararat (88) was second and Brunswick (136) came in fifth. Each team qualified for states. Individually, the Eagles were led by Camila Ciembroniewicz (10th, 20:37.06). The fastest Dragon was Aela Hemberger (16th, 21:10.00).

The Brunswick and Mt. Ararat boys run in the Class A state meet Saturday at 11 a.m., in Belfast. The Class A girls’ race starts at 11:45 a.m.

In Class B South, Morse’s boys finished eighth and the girls were ninth and neither team qualified for states. Finn Thelen finished 24th (18:39.00) in the boys’ race and qualified for states as an individual. In the girls’ meet, Jenny Wilbraham was 29th (22:54.50) and also qualified as an individual.

Field hockey

Mt. Ararat’s field hockey was the lone local squad to reach the playoffs and the fourth-ranked Eagles lost, 6-2, to visiting No. 5 Messalonskee in last week’s quarterfinals to finish 9-6.

Volleyball

The Brunswick/Mt. Ararat volleyball team earned the No. 10 seed in Class A and was ousted by seventh-ranked Cheverus in straight-sets (19-25, 16-25, 13-25) in the preliminary round last Thursday to finish 4-11.

“It’s promising, but we’re not satisfied with a first round loss again,” said Brunswick/Mt. Ararat coach Kaili Phillips. “We’re losing four, so we have most of our lineup coming back.”

Boys’ soccer

Mt. Ararat boys’ soccer team finished 11-2-1 and second in Class A North after closing the regular season with a 1-0 home loss to Brunswick. The Eagles hosted No. 7 Hampden Academy (8-6) in the quarterfinal round. Mt. Ararat won the regular season meeting, 5-0, at home Sept. 26. If the Eagles were able to advance to Saturday’s semifinals, they will host either No. 3 Bangor (10-1-3) or No. 6 Edward Little (6-7-1). 

Brunswick wound up 7-5-2 and fourth in Class A North after its 1-0 home win over Mt. Ararat in last week’s finale. The Dragons hosted No. 5 Mt. Blue (8-5-1) in the quarterfinals Wednesday. The teams settled for a 2-2 draw in the season opener, Aug. 30 in Farmington. If Brunswick advanced, it will either go to No. 1 Lewiston (12-0-2) or host No. 8 Oxford Hills (7-7) in Saturday’s semifinals.

The playoffs continue with the regional final Wednesday of next week on the fields of the higher seeds. The Class A state final is Saturday, Nov. 3 in Bath.

In Class B South, Morse finished 10th after a 4-7-3 regular season (which was capped by a 6-0 win at Oceanside). The Shipbuilders then lost, 2-1, in double-overtime, at No. 7 Leavitt in the preliminary round to finish 4-8-3.

Girls’ soccer

On the girls’ side, Brunswick earned the No. 2 seed in Class A North after an 11-1-2 regular season, which ended with a 1-1 home draw against Mt. Ararat. The Dragons hosted No. 7 Skowhegan (7-6-1) Wednesday in the quarterfinals. On Sept. 29, Brunswick won, 3-1, at Skowhegan. If the Dragons advanced to Saturday’s semifinals, they will host either No. 3 Messalonskee (13-1) or sixth-ranked Oxford Hills (8-4-2)

Mt. Ararat finished 8-5-1 and fifth after its 1-1 tie at Brunswick in the finale. The Eagles went to No. 4 Bangor (9-4-1) for the quarterfinals Wednesday. On Sept. 29, Mt. Ararat lost, 3-1, at Bangor. If the Eagles advanced to Saturday’s semifinals, they’ll either go to top-ranked, defending state champion Camden Hills (14-0) or host No. 8 Hampden Academy (5-8-1). 

The playoffs continue with the regional final Wednesday of next week on the fields of the higher seeds. The Class A state final is Saturday, Nov. 3 in Bath.

In Class B South, Morse went 6-6-2 in the regular season, closing with a 2-0 home loss to Oceanside. As the No. 6 seed in the region, the Shipbuilders hosted No. 11 Lake Region in the preliminary round, but lost, 1-0, to finish 6-7-2.

Football

Brunswick’s football team finished 5-3 and third in Class B North after closing with a 30-6 home loss to Cony Friday. The Dragons will host No. 6 Brewer (2-6) in Friday’s quarterfinal round. On Oct. 12, Brunswick won, 14-0, at Brewer.

In Class C South, Morse finished 4-4 after a 38-16 win at Mt. Ararat in Saturday’s finale. The Shipbuilders (ranked sixth in the region) open the playoffs at No. 3 Gardiner (3-5) Friday. On Aug. 31, Gardiner won, 34-7, at Morse.

In Class B South, Mt. Ararat wound up 2-6 and eighth after a 38-16 home loss to Morse in the finale. The Eagles play at top-ranked Kennebunk (8-0) in Friday’s quarterfinal. Mt. Ararat lost, 70-0, at home to the Rams back on Sept. 8.
