PORTLAND — The Maine Island Trail Association, in partnership with Yarmouth-based software company Chimani, on July 1 released an app for virtual exploration of the Maine Island Trail, a recreational water trail that connects over 200 coastal islands and mainland sites for the benefit of small boaters.
The app provides trail news and photos, maps the location of pump-put services and launch points, and more, although it is not intended for navigation.
“Developing an app is a major milestone for MITA,” Executive Director Doug Welch said in a news release. “We see this as an exciting way to engage the public in our work on the wild islands of Maine by letting people know what is out there and how to get there safely.”
The complete app is only available to MITA members. Individual memberships begin at $45 a year. To join, visit mita.org/join or call 761-8225.
