Minnie M. (Mackie) Wallingford, 79: Hardworking woman who doted on her grandchildren

SOUTH PORTLAND — Minnie Mabel (Mackie) Wallingford, 79, died peacefully May 21 surrounded by family and friends.

She was born Oct. 6, 1930, in Monson, the daughter of William Onnie and Nina Doris (Mountain) Mackie.

In 1942 the family moved to Peaks Island before settling in South Portland in 1946.

The following year she met her future husband Robert “Pat” Wallingford while he was working for her father.

They were married on March 20, 1948.

Over the years she worked numerous jobs to support her family after the death of her husband in 1971. She worked for Ray Mac Taxi, Songo Shoes, Seaboard Packing, Standard Linen Uniforms, E.T. Burrows and Unum. Her last job was working for Pratt-Abbott Dry Cleaners.

She was a strong woman and a loving grandmother who doted on her grandchildren.

Her other passions were animals, celebrating the family’s Irish heritage, and supporting the South Portland football team and the South Portland Fire Department.

She was a member of the Red Hats Society of Westbrook and the Redman’s Hall Pocohontas Society.

She was predeceased by her husband Robert “Pat” Wallingford, two sons, Robert “Bobby” Wallingford, Jr., and Richard “Dick” Wallingford, three sisters, Viola (Mackie) Holt, Doris (Mackie) Crandell, Virginia (Mackie) Maloney, and two brothers, Thomas “Mickey” Mackie and John C. Mackie.

Surviving are her devoted children and their spouses, Jane and George Grabler of South Portland, Jean and Richard Burgess of Hollis, daughter-in-law Linda Wallingford of Westbrook; her brother William Mackie and sister-in-law Laurel of Gorham, and brother-in-law, Boyd Holt of Grand Junction, Colo.; grandchildren Richard and Barbara Wallingford of Standish, Patrick and Kristie Wallingford of Dexter, Mo., Robert Wallingford, III,of Westbrook, Rena Wallingford of Tracy, Calif., Ryan and Maureen Wallingford of South Portland, Melissa and David Boissonneault of South Portland, John and George Grabler of South Portland and Daniel Burgess of Hollis; 10 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and her two beloved cats, Walter and Henry.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
