Region 10 students win big in Bangor

Four Region 10 students had top-three finishes and earned medals in various competitions on March 8 at the statewide annual Skills USA Competition.

Twenty-five students from Region 10 Technical High School in Brunswick competed in a variety of technical skills and leadership challenges at Eastern Maine Community College and United Technologies Center in Bangor. The competition featured over 800 students from Maine’s 27 secondary career and technical education schools, along with Maine community college students majoring in technical studies.

The following local students proved to be among the best-prepared students in the state: Dan Pratt (Automotive Refinishing) and Jasmen Libby (Automotive Collision Tool Identification) won second place silver medals, while Ricky Allen (Outdoor Equipment Technician) and Alex Namer (Firefighting) won third-place bronze medals. In addition to earning medals, Pratt and Allen were recognized with scholarships from Universal Technical Institute as well.

Nancy Weed, Region 10’s Superintendent/Director, said, “Every year I see this event, I am more amazed by the motivation, skill, and excitement shown by so many of our technical students throughout the state in these competitions. Their professionalism interacting with employers and community members from all over Maine – it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Health career scholarship deadline pending 

The deadline to apply for the Herb Paris Health Career Scholarship, administered by Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary, is April 15. 

Each year, the auxiliary awards approximately $40,000 in Herb Paris Scholarships to deserving area high school students, college students, and hospital employees interested in pursuing or furthering a career in health care. To be considered, applicants must plan to pursue an education at an accredited institution and major in a program that will lead to a health care career.

Grant amounts range from $500 to $2,000, and students can receive the scholarship for up to four years if they maintain a grade standard and submit reports to the scholarship committee each semester.

Funding is made possible through the Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary, which raises several thousands of dollars to support the hospital’s mission each year through various fundraisers.
