The new year is upon us and local sports teams are eager to see where it leads as the still young winter season has shown promise. Here’s a glimpse:

Boys’ basketball

Brunswick’s boys’ basketball team improved to 4-2 with a 61-41 home win over Leavitt last Tuesday. After going to Lewiston Wednesday, the Dragons visit Kennebunk Saturday.

Mt. Ararat fell to 3-3 with a 61-48 loss at Falmouth. The Eagles hosted Medomak Valley Wednesday and welcomes Biddeford Saturday.

Morse fell to 2-4 after a 60-31 home loss to Greely last Tuesday. After going to Edward Little Wednesday, the Shipbuilders visit Westbrook Saturday.

Girls’ basketball 

Brunswick’s girls’ team improved to 2-4 with a 49-42 win at Leavitt last Tuesday. The Dragons hosted Lewiston Wednesday and welcome Kennebunk Saturday.

Mt. Ararat fell to 1-5 after a 32-29 overtime home loss to Falmouth last Tuesday. After going to Medomak Valley Wednesday, the Eagles visit Biddeford Saturday.

Morse fell to 3-3 after a 76-41 loss at defending Class B champion Greely last Tuesday. The Shipbuilders hosted Edward Little Wednesday and Westbrook Saturday.

Hyde (2-2) is back in action Tuesday at home versus North Yarmouth Academy.

Hockey

Brunswick’s boys’ hockey team was 3-3-1 at press time after a 5-0 home loss to Gardiner and a 2-2 tie at Cape Elizabeth. The Dragons are at Leavitt Saturday.

Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon takes its 2-2 record into a home game versus Poland Monday.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick improved to 5-3 after a 7-6 home win over Edward Little last Tuesday. The Dragons were home with Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray-New Gloucester Wednesday and welcome Portland/Deering Monday.

Mt. Ararat/Morse has lost 10 games in a row and fell to 1-10 with recent losses at Cheverus (4-2) and St. Dom’s (7-0). After going to Edward Little/Leavitt Wednesday, Mt. Ararat/Morse hosts Brunswick Wednesday of next week.

Indoor track

Local indoor track teams took part in a meet at Bowdoin College last week. In the boys’ competition, Brunswick came in third and Mt. Ararat placed fifth. In the girls’ meet, the Dragons were fourth and the Eagles sixth.

Wrestling

The Brunswick/Mt. Ararat and Morse wrestling teams were both 1-7 entering 2016.

Brunswick/Mt. Ararat lost, 54-12, to Belfast last Wednesday. 

The Shipbuilders are coming off losses to Dirigo (39-27), Oxford Hills (54-18) and Mountain Valley (39-18).
