Local students make president’s list

The following students have made president’s list at their respective university.

Southern New Hampshire University:  Jamie Emerson, of Bath; Jonathon Esquell, Lizmailyn Esquell and Richard Kerr, all of Brunswick; Stephanie Boucher, Malcolm Chandler and Jennifer Tisdale, all of Harpswell; and Amber Berthiaume, Sandra Fitzgerald, Adam Giles, Danielle Luedee and Ashley Woodworth, all of Topsham.

Mt. Ararat senior raises funds for local nonprofit

Mt. Ararat High School senior Bailey Sullivan organized the first annual MTA Ultimate Frisbee Tournament to benefit Volunteers of America. Sullivan formed a co-ed ultimate team at Mt. Ararat and organized the event as part of her senior capstone project. Her adviser was Woodside Elementary School teacher, Rob Horne. Teams from Mt. Ararat and Brunswick high schools enjoyed some friendly competition on May 18 at Mt. Ararat’s fields. About 20 players gathered for the tournament and together the teams raised about $200 for Volunteers of America, a nonprofit in Brunswick that helps people rebuild their lives through more than 30 programs in Maine and New Hampshire.

Maine teachers recognized and honored

Eric Varney of Morse High School in Bath was one of 16 teachers were named County Teachers of the Year. Varney was joined by Kara Beal, Valley Rivers Middle School, Fort Kent; Gordon Crosby, Poland Regional High School, Poland; Sarah Brokofsky, Westbrook Middle School, Westbrook; Sarah Reynolds, Cascade Brook School, Farmington; Andrea Beardsley, Ellsworth High School, Ellsworth; Daniel Crocker, Hall Dale Middle School, Farmingdale; Kristi Todd, Union Elementary School, Union; Cordelia Chase, Boothbay Regional Elementary, Boothbay; Jeffrey Bailey, Mountain Valley High School, Rumford; Victoria Grotton, Glenburn School, Glenburn; Dyan McCarthy-Clark, SeDoMoCha Middle, Dover-Foxcroft; Eric Varney, Morse High School, Bath; Jennifer Dorman, Skowhegan Area Middle School, Skowhegan; Phyllis Frkuska-Heeren, Drinkwater Elementary, Northport; Ann Luginbuhl, Charlotte Elementary, Charlotte; Kate Smith, Central Elementary, MSAD 35, South Berwick.

The teachers were honored at a State House Hall of Flags ceremony attended by Education Commissioner Jim Rier, Senate President Justin Alfond, D-Portland, state Board of Education Vice Chairman Peter Geiger, 2014 Maine Teacher of the Year Karen MacDonald, and Educate Maine Executive Director Tanna Clews.
