Bus driver is book smart
Maine School Administrative District 75 bus driver Don Sanders had a good idea that has led to a program now being replicated across the state and beyond.
Along with Williams-Cone School Principal Randa Rineer, and Topsham Public Library’s Children’s Librarian Mariah Sewall, Sanders implement Bus Book Bags, a program where bags of library books are on all of the school buses for children to read and share. The program has not only ensured that literacy skills are being developed beyond the classroom, but has also led to informal mentor relationships between older and younger kids as they read together.
Sanders, who won a Giraffe award last year, has been named the 2016 Joan McGovern Education Support Professional of the Year Award from the Maine Education Association for the program.
