School Garden Thriving at Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementry School

BRUNSWICK — Students, teachers, faculty, parents and community members have come together to create school gardens at the Harriet Beecher Stowe Elementary School in Brunswick.

The garden project is coordinated by parent Sarah Wolpow and is maintained by volunteer power and the donation of materials.

Students took part in a contest to name the garden and eventually chose “Harriet’s Haven – The Place Where Kids Sprout.”

Salad greens have already been planted, and there are plans to plant heirloom tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, wheat, oats, corn, squash, pumpkins, morning glory, scarlet runners and sunflowers before the end of the school year. Families, coordinated by master gardener Debbie Atwood, have volunteered to tend the gardens during the summer.
