Students learn Native American crafts and culture

HARPSWELL — Harpswell Community School students recently participated in the Damariscotta River Association’s Wabanaki living skills and culture program. The program uses an outdoor, hands-on approach to teach the history and culture of Maine’s native tribes, and helps schools meet a state curriculum requirement in Native American studies. 

Now in its ninth year at the DRA’s Great Salt Bay Farm in Damariscotta, the program featured instruction by Passamaquoddy member David Moses Bridges, one of only eight master birch-bark canoe craftsmen in the world. Another Passamaquoddy, Gerald “Butch” Jacobs, discussed the tradition of weaving baskets and demonstrated how ash is prepared to create them.

Relay outruns fundraisng goal for food bank

BATH — At 5 a.m. Nov. 16, 13 runners from Hyde School hit the road for the first leg of a 208-mile fundraising run to Hyde’s sister school in Woodstock, Conn. The group took turns running five miles each in relay fashion until reaching Hyde-Woodstock the next day.

The run raised $4,237 for the Bath Food Mobile, a program administered by Grace Episcopal Church that offers free food to needy Mid-Coast families. The funds far exceeded the group’s goal of raising $1,000, which covers the cost of one of the Food Mobile’s monthly truck deliveries.
