The past week has been a busy one for local athletes as all spring sports have either started or completed their postseasons. Here’s a look at what’s happened and yet to come:

Track

Brunswick, Morse and Mt. Ararat took part at the Class A outdoor track state championships Saturday in Saco.
In the girls’ meet, won by Edward Little with 136 points, Mt. Ararat placed fourth with 41.5, Brunswick was fifth with 38 and Morse came in 15th with 6 points.

Dragons standout Kristin Slotnick won the 100 (12.78 seconds), 200 (26.64) and the 400 (57.67). The Eagles were paced by Colby Gail, who won the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches).

On the boys’ side, Bonny Eagle was champion with 77 points. Brunswick tied Windham for 11th place with 26 points. Morse tied Brewer for 17th with 11 points. Mt. Ararat was 27th with 1 point. Morse’s Kory Scarponi, runner-up in the racewalk (7 minutes, 31.89 seconds), and Brunswick’s Will Geoghegan, second in the two-mile (9:39.05), were the top local finishers.

Next up is the New England championships in Burlington, Vt., Saturday.

Tennis

The Brunswick boys and Morse girls advanced to the tennis regional finals (played Wednesday, too late for print).
The Dragons, the No. 6 seed in Eastern A, downed No. 3 Brewer 3-2 and No. 7 Gardiner 5-0 to set up a showdown with undefeated and top-ranked Lewiston, the six-time defending state champ.

Mt. Ararat went 10-2 and earned the No. 4 seed, but after winning 5-0 over No. 5 Mt. Blue, the Eagles were eliminated, 3-2 by Lewiston in the semifinals to wind up 11-3.

Morse went 0-12 this spring and didn’t make the playoffs.

On the girls’ side, it was a much different story for the Shipbuilders, who went 8-4 in the regular season and wound up with the No. 6 seed. Morse was a 5-0 winner at No. 3 Cony in the quarterfinals, then eliminated No. 2 Bangor 4-1 in the semifinals to earn a regional final date with top-ranked and undefeated Lewiston, the three-time defending champ.

Brunswick was 9-3 this year and earned the No. 5 seed. After downing No. 4 Hampden 5-0, the Dragons were eliminated 4-1 at Lewiston in the semifinals to wind up 10-4.

Mt. Ararat was 7-5 and ranked seventh. The Eagles lost 3-2 at No. 2 Bangor in the quarterfinals and ended the season 7-6.

Baseball

The baseball playoffs were supposed to begin Tuesday, but rain forced postponements.

Brunswick went 11-5 this spring and earned the No. 7 seed. The Dragons hosted No. 10 Hampden Academy (5-11) in the preliminary round. On May 11, Brunswick won 8-4 at Hampden. If victorious, the Dragons then visited No. 2 Edward Little (12-4) in the quarterfinals (also too late for print). Brunswick beat the Red Eddies 3-0 at home May 1 and lost 8-5 in Auburn May 26.

Mt. Ararat, meanwhile, won its final eight games to go 10-6 and earn the No. 5 seed. The Eagles went to No. 4 Bangor (13-3) in the quarterfinals Thursday (too late for print). Back on May 11, Mt. Ararat dropped a 3-2 decision at the Rams.

Morse fell short of the playoffs after finishing 1-15.

The semifinals are Saturday, on the field of the highest remaining seeds. The Eastern A title game is Wednesday at 5 p.m., at Morton Field in Augusta. The Class A state final is in Augusta Saturday, June 20, at 2 p.m.

Softball

On the girls’ side of the diamond, both Brunswick and Mt. Ararat took part in prelims.

The Eagles (7-9 and eighth in Eastern A) played host to No. 9 Leavitt (6-10). On May 4, Mt. Ararat lost 5-4 (in nine innings) in Turner, but on May 22 at home, the Eagles won, 3-1. A preliminary round win would have sent Mt. Ararat to No. 1 Cony (16-0) for the quarterfinals. The Eagles lost 4-1 and 5-0 to the Rams during the regular year.

The Dragons (7-9 this spring and 11th in the standings) was at No. 6 Edward Little (11-5). The Red Eddies beat Brunswick twice this season, 7-6 on the road May 1 and 12-4 at home May 26. If the Dragons sprung an upset, they visited No. 3 Bangor (14-2) in the quarterfinals. The teams didn’t play this year.

Morse went 2-14 this year and didn’t make the playoffs.

The semifinals are Saturday, on the field of the highest remaining seeds. The Eastern A title game is Wednesday at 7 p.m., at Cony High School in Augusta. The Class A state final is in Augusta Saturday, June 20, at 12 p.m.

Boys’ lacrosse

Brunswick’s boys’ lacrosse team has its sights set on a third straight regional championship. The Dragons had little trouble in going 12-0 this year and earned the top seed in Eastern A. Brunswick will play host to either No. 4 Lewiston (6-6) or No. 5 Edward Little (4-8) in the semifinals Saturday. The Dragons beat the Blue Devils twice, 16-1 and 6-5 during the regular season and dispatched the Red Eddies twice as well, 12-6 and 9-4.

Mt. Ararat went 8-4 this year and wound up ranked third, necessitating a semifinal round showdown at No. 2 Messalonskee (9-3) Thursday (too late for print). The Eagles dropped two close decisions against Messalonskee this year, 7-6 at home and 10-8 on the road.

The winner will likely draw Brunswick in the regional final Wednesday. The Dragons beat Mt. Ararat twice this year, 11-4 and 11-2. They also downed Messalonskee twice, 11-4 at home and 7-6 (in overtime) on the road.

In Eastern B, Morse (9-3) earned the No. 5 seed and had to go to No. 4 St. Dom’s (8-4) for the quarterfinals (too late for print). The teams didn’t play this year. If victorious, the Shipbuilders will have the daunting task of visiting undefeated, defending state champion Yarmouth (12-0) in Saturday’s semifinals. Morse doesn’t play the Clippers during the regular season.

Looking ahead, the state games are both June 20 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The Class A game starts at 10 a.m. The Class B contest begins at 3 p.m.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Brunswick is also looking superb. The Dragons went 12-0 and earned the top seed and a bye into Saturday’s Eastern A semifinal round. Brunswick will host either No. 4 Cony (9-3) or No. 5 Oxford Hills (5-7). The Dragons twice handled the Vikings this spring, 21-5 at home and 19-6 on the road. They also downed host Cony, 16-3.

Mt. Ararat (9-3) earned the No. 3 seed and visited No. 2 Messalonskee (10-2) in Thursday’s semifinal round (too late for print). Mt. Ararat lost the regular season meeting at Messalonskee, 10-6. The Eagles also fell twice to Brunswick, 19-7 and 16-7.

In Eastern B, Morse went 6-6 and wound up third, setting up a semifinal round showdown at No. 2 NYA (10-2), the defending regional champion, Saturday at 1 p.m. The Shipbuilders and Panthers don’t play in the regular season.

Looking ahead, the state games are both June 20 at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The Class A game starts at 12:30 p.m. The Class B contest begins at 5:30 p.m.

Mt. Ararat’s Logan Prescott takes part in the mile at Saturday’s Class A girls’ outdoor track state meet in Saco. The Eagles came in fourth as a team.
Brunswick’s Kenzell Crawford races toward a seventh place finish in the 300 high hurdles Saturday. Crawford finished in a time of 43.02 seconds.
Brunswick’s Alexis Dickinson takes part in the first leg of the 400 relay. The Dragons wound up fifth at the meet, behind Edward Little, Scarborough, Bangor and Mt. Ararat.
