BATH — Construction of a more than $6 million downtown medical office building could begin this summer, with an opening planned for early next year.

Mid Coast Medical Group announced the project Wednesday. The new facility is planned to stand at the corner of Centre and Franklin Streets, according to a press release.

The project still needs site plan approval from Bath, City Planner Andrew Deci said Wednesday. A pre-application workshop is scheduled for March 18, with a full review of Mid Coast’s application to follow next month.

Mid Coast’s health-care providers and support staff would move to the new building from their current offices at 1356 Washington St.

“We are delighted for this opportunity to establish a modern medical facility in a convenient Bath location,” Lois Skillings, president and CEO of Mid Coast Health Services, said in a statement. “Consistent with our mission to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to our community, this facility will benefit the city, its residents, and the broader region by expanding health care services and providing easier access for all.”

Mid Coast proposed the idea last year, and JHR Development has worked with the city to cement plans for the two-story, 20,000-square-foot building. The medical group will occupy three-quarters of the space.

Architects Gawron Turgeon have designed the facility, and SMRT of Portland will design the interior space. Wright-Ryan Construction of Portland is the contractor.

“Construction of this new practice space in Bath represents an important next step in Mid Coast’s commitment to our patients and to the health of our community,” Dr. Nancy Hasenfus, an internal medicine specialist with Mid Coast, said in a statement. “Like our recently opened practice in Topsham, this space is being crafted to further improve the coordination of care and to facilitate seamless communication among the provider team. Designing a clinical space that supports patient participation in their care enables excellent health outcomes.”

Mid Coast Medical Group is a department of Brunswick-based Mid Coast Hospital. It’s primary-care physicians and specialists have offices in Bath, Topsham and Brunswick.
