FALMOUTH —Voters overwhelmingly supported maintaining METRO bus service to Falmouth by a vote of 5,289 to 2,223.

The number 7 bus line, which services Falmouth and parts of Portland, came under fire in June when resident Michael Doyle began a petition to remove the service and end all financial ties effective Dec. 31, 2013.

Doyle said he does not fundamentally oppose the bus service itself, he just wanted residents to have the opportunity to vote on the $117,000 expendature.

Bus supporters campaigned on the idea that the bus is essential transportation for both residents an businesses, arguing that 19 businesses in Falmouth have employees the rely on service to get to work.
