SCARBOROUGH — Merlin A. White died peacefully at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough on July 19, following a battle with cancer.

White was born Oct. 12, 1938, in Ludlow, the son of Cyril and Velma White.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1957-1963.

White married Sonya Bither in February 1962. The couple lived in Houlton, then moved to Scarborough in 1964.

A member of Teamster Local 340, he worked as a truck driver for O’Donnell’s Express, which was later purchased by Sanborn’s and then APA trucking companies. White retired after 30 years of driving, and then became a part-time bus driver for the Scarborough School Department, which he served for 19 years.

He was predeceased by his parents and by his sister, Charlotte Reeves.

Surviving are his wife, Sonya White; daughters, Sandra White, and Linda White Mitchell and her husband, Michael; son, Merl White Jr.; two grandsons, William Mitchell and A.J. Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were scheduled to be held Thursday, July 24, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 671 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough. A private graveside service will be held at a later date.
