PORTLAND — Eileen Skinner, president and chief executive officer of Mercy Hospital, and a senior vice president of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, will resign her positions effective March 31.

The announcement was made Monday by EMHS CEO M. Michelle Hood, who said EMHS chief operating officer Jay Eckersley will oversee Mercy Hospital on an interim basis.

“It has been my privilege to work alongside some extraordinarily talented and dedicated people at both Mercy and EMHS,” Skinner said. “I cannot thank them enough for their devotion to the mission and their hard work.”

Skinner has been at Mercy since 2002 and was instrumental in the construction of the new hospital on Fore River Parkway as well as Mercy’s integration into EMHS in 2013.

EMHS spokeswoman Jillian Sloban said Skinner agreed to remain through the end of the month “to finalize the first phase of strategic plans that are setting Mercy’s future course.”

Hood said the search to replace Skinner will begin immediately.
