CUMBERLAND — Two men accused of breaking into J. Brothers Variety on Gray Road on Sunday faced a court hearing Wednesday in Portland.

Larry R. Cox, 50, of Lamb Street in Westbrook, and Vincent Lombardi II, 39, of Saco Road in Standish, were charged with two counts each of burglary and theft. Lombardi was also charged with violating conditions of release.

According to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets were stolen from the store. The burglary was discovered Monday when employees arrived for work.

By that time, the men were already in custody at Cumberland County Jail in Portland, after Westbrook police arrested them Sunday evening. The men were detained as suspects in the theft of store keys from Pit Stop Fuel on Route 25 in Standish.

Store clerks told sheriff’s deputies the keys were taken after suspects distracted employees. Store video surveillance provided leads about the suspects and their vehicle. After deputies alerted local law enforcement agencies, the suspects’ vehicle was discovered on Lamb Street in Westbrook with quantities of cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets inside.

The vehicle was impounded. After deputies learned of the Cumberland store burglary, a vehicle search turned up items matching those reported stolen from J. Brothers Variety and the Pit Stop store keys, police said.
