PORTLAND
— A waterfront path high on the priority list for bicycle and pedestrian advocates may finally be about to happen.

A meeting has been scheduled Wednesday, Sept. 23, to discuss the feasibility of creating a new trail that would run along West Commercial Street, from Veterans Memorial Bridge to High Street.

The trail, according to the city, would connect existing trails along the Fore River Parkway and Harborview Park. Veteran’s Memorial Bridge is slated for reconstruction in 2010, and the new bridge will be equipped with sufficient bike and pedestrian lanes – something the existing bridge lacks.

Those lanes could allow cyclists to travel safely from Portland to the Maine Mall area in South Portland.

The city and Portland Trails are hosting a meeting to discuss ideas for the trail Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Reiche School, 166 Brackett St.

An engineering study for the new path is being funded by the Maine Department of Transportation.
