Catherine McAuley basketball standout Alexa Coulombe has verbally committed to receive a full basketball scholarship at Boston College. Coulombe, who is entering her junior year, was McAuley’s 2009-10 Winter Female Athlete of the Year after averaging 10 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots. Coulombe spent the summer traveling across the country playing AAU basketball for the New England Crusaders. Coulombe follows in the footsteps of former McAuley standout Sarah Marshall, who also played for BC.

“(BC) was basically my first choice,” Coulombe said. “I always wanted to go there. I took some time and saw other schools, but that was the best fit. I wanted to go to a school with good academics and I’ve always loved Boston. It was better for me to make the decision early.”

“Alexa will do great,” said new Lions coach Amy Vachon, who starred in college at the University of Maine. “She’s really worked on her shot. She’s 6′-2″ and plays inside, but she can step out and hit the 3. Her passing is so unselfish, too unselfish at times. Defensively, she gets it. I’ve never seen a high school girl block shots like she does.”
