PORTLAND — Catherine McAuley High School will become The Maine Girls’ Academy on July 1.
The June 9 announcement followed the 46-year-old school’s decision to become independent of its religious affiliation with the Sisters of Mercy. Catherine McAuley was the founder of the order, and the Rhode Island-based Sisters of Mercy Northeast Community decided the school could not continue to use the name or a variation of it.
The state’s only all-girls high school received more than 400 name suggestions from faculty, alumnae, students and community members. It’s board of trustees unanimously selected Maine Girls’ Academy.
