ADELE WERNER, Sophomore-Cross country

A runner who’s just coming into her own, Werner hinted at greatness to come with a very strong season in 2012.

Werner lives in New Gloucester, started running in middle school and came to McAuley as a freshman. She had a promising season in 2011 and quickly emerged as the Lions’ pack leader this fall.

She was sixth in the season’s first meet and placed in the top 12 each time out in the regular season, with a high of second in a meet at Deering in late September.

Werner was 28th at regional championship meet, an improvement of 13 spots from her freshman year, and set the table for what should be memorable junior and senior campaigns.

Werner also runs distance in indoor and outdoor track. She runs six days a week and has taken part in road races. Werner is in the Key Club and Equestrian Club and works at a horse barn in Gray. She hopes to run in college.

Her steady improvement and commitment have made her a runner to watch. Adele Werner, McAuley’s Fall Athlete of the Year, is only getting started.

Coach Tim Donovan‘s comment: “Adele is one of the top workers on the team. She is truly a leader. She leads very quietly by example. She prepares very well for meets and practices. Last summer was her first real summer of workouts. I believe she will step that up again this coming summer. I have coached some very talented kids over the years. I believe she will eventually be right up there with the best. Adele has not hurried her success, which has kept her healthy and grounded. Adele has always been a team player and her teammates see that. I think she is ready to step in up and will.”
