PORTLAND — Margaret Downing has been named the new head of school at Catherine McAuley High School, the Stevens Avenue school announced in a press release.
Downing will take over leadership of the the state’s only Catholic college-prep school for girls from Sister Edward Mary Kelleher, who has been principal since 1980. Kelleher will serve as principal emerita during the coming school year before officially retiring.
Downing, who holds a master’s degree in education administration from Boston College and a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College in Vermont, has been principal of St. Joseph’s Central High School in Pittsfield, Mass., for the last decade.
Downing is a former member and chairwoman of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges visiting teams, which are responsible for school accreditation in the region. She was also involved in new teacher training in the Diocese of Springfield, where she directed religious education.
