FREEPORT — Mary Sawyer Briggs, 93, died May 29 at Hawthorne House.

She was born in Topsham, June 25, 1915, daughter of Henry and Emily Fox and attended local schools.

She married James “Cyclone” Sawyer in 1933. He died on June 15, 1935. In 1941, she married George L. Briggs.

For many years, she worked as a stitcher in several Freeport shoe factories.

She and her late husband George enjoyed camping with their children and later with their grandchildren. Her sense of humor and great attitude towards life will be missed.

She was predeceased by her second husband, George, on Nov. 29, 1988, her son Richard D. Sawyer, her stepson, Chester A. Briggs, a sister Alice Haskell, and two brothers, Henry and Robert Fox.

Surviving are her children, E. Joan (Sawyer) Brockway and her husband, Thomas of Freeport, George R. Briggs and his wife Diane of Freeport; stepdaughter Rebecca (Briggs) Dennison of Winslow; sister Emily Greig and her husband William of Topsham and a brother, George E. Fox of Topsham; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., June 4 at the First Parish Church, 40 Main St., Freeport.

Arrangements are by Stetson’s Funeral Home, 12 Federal St., Brunswick.
