BATH — Mary Pelkey, 85, died peacefully Dec. 11 at Horizons Nursing Home in Brunswick.

She was born Jan. 2, 1928, in Bath, the daughter of Pascal and Mary Olive Harper. She grew up in Bath, and graduated from Morse High School in 1945. Pelkey went on to attend the nursing school of Maine General Hospital in Portland, and graduated in 1951. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from San Jose State College in 1956, and her master’s from the University of California in 1968.

Pelkey taught several nursing classes at Santa Clara County (Calif.) Hospital, and retired in 1987.  She and her husband then made their home in Phippsburg, moving in 2002 to the Schooner Ridge Condos in Bath.

She was predeceased by her parents; step-father, Edward Hawkes Sr.; and brothers, Havilan Joseph Harper and Dale Harper.

She is survived by her husband, Ronald, of Bath; sisters-in-law, June Harper and Mary Pelkey; step-sister, Edith Hill and husband Loyd, of Phippsburg; nephew, Leo Hill and wife Lisa, and their two daughters, Stephanie and Allison, of Brunswick; niece, Lynn Pawley and husband Ray; nephews, Wayne Harper and wife Sherry, and their son Jake, and Gregory Pelkey and wife Clarice, and their sons Gregory Jr. and Jeffrey.

Visiting hours were held Dec. 16 at the David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, Bath. A funeral was held Dec. 17 at the home. Following the service, interment took place at Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, the family requested that any memorial donations be made in Pelkey’s name to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1893, Memphis, TN 38101; to the Maine Coastal Humane Society, 30 Range Road, Brunswick, ME 04011; or to the Bath Area Food Bank, P.O. Box 65, Bath, ME 04530.
