CAPE ELIZABETH — Mary C. Fox, 88, a longtime resident of Cape Elizabeth, died peacefully Oct. 5 at South Portland Nursing Home, with her family by her side.

Fox was born Dec. 6, 1925, in Portland, the daughter of Thomas and Anne (Loftus) Foley. She grew up in the Gorham’s Corner area of the city and graduated from Portland High School in 1942.

After graduation, she went to work in the accounting department at Hay’s Drug Store. There, she met many lifelong friends as well as her husband, Philip J. Fox. She loved being a stay-at-home mom and raising the couple’s five children. Once they were grown, she went back to work, this time in the circulation department of the Portland Press Herald. She retired in 1988.

Fox was an original member of the “The Club Girls,” a women’s group of family and friends who started to meet regularly just after World War II and continued for over 60 years. She also served as secretary of the Democratic Party in Cape Elizabeth for several years.

She is remembered for her singing, piano playing, love of all things sweet, and her contagious happiness.

She was predeceased by her mother and father, Tom and Anne Foley; husband, Philip J. Fox; son, Daniel J. Fox; sister, Anne Tarbox; and son-in-law, Peter J. Kempers.
