PORTLAND — Traffic delays are expected on the Martin’s Point Bridge from 5 a.m.-9 p.m. Thursday, as construction crews deliver 600 yards of concrete throughout the day.
Drivers should expect traffic on Route 1 and Veranda Street between Portland and Falmouth to be slow, according to a press release from Carol Morris, a communications contractor for the Maine Department of Transportation.
No major traffic stops are expected, but the estimated eight delivery trucks an hour are likely to snarl traffic. The concrete is needed to build a cofferdam – a temporary, watertight enclosure that allows construction to take place in wet or underwater areas, according to the press release.
MDOT is asking travelers to take alternate routes, if possible.
Construction of the new bridge began last summer adjacent to the existing bridge. The new structure is expected to be open to traffic by the end of the year and complete in the first quarter of 2014.
