PORTLAND — Martin Joseph “Beano” Joyce, 91, died March 18 at St. Joseph’s Manor with his family at his side.

Born in Portland in 1920, a son of Michael and Delia Duffy Joyce, he attended Portland schools and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1937.

During World War II he served with the Fifth Air Force Division.  

He worked as a longshoreman on the Portland waterfront and as a clerk at the U.S. Postal Service for 35 years.

On Sept. 13, 1951, he married Helen Hayden.

He was a longtime communicant of St. Patrick’s Church in Portland, a 63-year member of the American Legion, a lifelong member of the Boys Club and the Irish American Club.

His wife and two sisters, Mary Joyce Griffin and Margaret Joyce Concannon, predeceased him.   

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa Marie Joyce and her husband, John A. Gale, of Portland; a grandson, Jonathan M. Gale, of Portland; sisters Bridget Joyce Malia and Katherine F. Joyce, both of Portland; brother John M. Joyce and his wife, Faye; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
