PORTLAND — A former standout high school athlete from Falmouth and her NFL quarterback husband have established a $125,000 scholarship endowment at Catherine McAuley High School.

Sarah Marshall Ryan and her husband, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, established the endowment to provide “assistance to young women seeking a McAuley education,” according to an announcement Monday by the Catholic girls’ school on Stevens Avenue.

The first scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded to an incoming freshman for the 2014-’15 school year. The scholarship will be based on “financial need, a commitment to academic excellence, involvement in the school community and beyond, and participation in McAuley’s athletic program,” according to the release.

The winning student will be mentored by Marshall Ryan, who graduated from the school in 2003 before attending Boston College on a basketball scholarship. She was a three-sport high school athlete who led McAuley to two consecutive basketball state championships, a three-time winner of the “Red” McMann MVP Award, and was Gatorade Player of the Year in Maine in 2002 and 2003.
