Mark Douglas Hough, 54: Proud father, passionate about his community

YARMOUTH — Mark Douglas Hough, 54, died unexpectedly, Feb. 15.

He was born June 17, 1959, in Portland, to Edward and Barbara Hough. Hough grew up on Town Landing Road in Falmouth, attended Falmouth schools, Tabor Academy, and graduated from Cheverus High School in 1978 as an accomplished athlete in baseball, basketball and football. Hough maintained many close friendships from his young, adventurous years that resulted in a lifetime of stories and memories.

He had a deep love for the ocean, and spent much time working on the waterfront lobstering and clamming. He also enjoyed time spent with family and friends on his vessel, Sea Story.

Hough was very passionate about politics and the community, serving two terms on the Yarmouth Town Council, as a member of the Harbor and Waterfront Committee, and the Cumberland Country Budget Advisory Committee. He was chairman of all committees as well. He was co-founder of the Royal River Fishing Tournament, co-director of the Yarmouth Clam Festival Parade, and Clam Festival Steering Committee member as well a 15-year member of the Yarmouth Rotary Club where he was a two-time recipient of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He was the co-owner of Hough and Company; building contractors, and Huffy’s Sandwich Shop.

Hough was the proud father of his two children, Hillary and Dillon, who viewed him as their coach, mentor, storyteller and friend.

He was predeceased by his brother, Gregory Hough; father, Edward Hough; grandparents, the Rev. Howard and Margaret Hough; and grandmother, Lillian Tubbs.

He is survived by his children, Hillary Hough and Dillon Hough; his wife of 26 years, Barbara Wheaton; mother, Barbara Masury; sister, Kathryn Hough Myhaver; and brother, Jonathan Hough. 

There was a memorial service on Feb. 22 at the First Parish Church in Yarmouth, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Yarmouth Rotary Club, P.O. Box 468, Yarmouth, ME 04096.
