BRUNSWICK — Marjorie Olive Murch Black, 97, of Orr’s Island, died Nov. 11 at her home.
Black was born in Portland on Aug. 24, 1915, the daughter of Karl and Isabelle Brown Murch. At age 3, upon the death of her mother, Black went to live with her grandparents in South Casco. Later she returned to Portland to attend school.
She graduated Deering High School in Portland and attended the University of Maine at Orono. In 1936, she married Kenneth Black, who died in 1992.
For many years Black worked for Senter’s Department Store in Brunswick, a job she loved. Until bedridden with arthritis, she was an active gardener, avid reader and gifted knitter. She learned to use a computer in her late 80s so that she could email friends and family and play games. She also enjoyed happy-hour gatherings with neighbors and family.
She was predeceased by her husband; son, Robert; and granddaughter Kathleen Black.
Black is survived by her sons Karl, of Quincy, Ill., and Timothy, of Orr’s Island; grandchildren Karen Palmondon, Maria Noel, Nathan Black, Theresa Stevens, Brian Black, Tiffany Black and Elisabeth Marcisso; step-grandchildren Seth Ferrante and Lauren Ferrante; great-grandchildren Karl and Daniel Plamondon, and Kieran and Analise Black, as well as a step-grandson, Dustin Hale.
Burial will be private. A celebration of Black’s life will be held at a later date. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Orr’s and Bailey Island Fire Department, P.O. Box 177, Orr’s Island, ME 04066.
Arrangements are under the direction and care of Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
