BRUNSWICK — Marilyn A. Gordon, 78, died peacefully at home on Sept. 2 with family and friends present.

Born in Lisbon Falls, Dec. 3, 1931, she was a daughter of August G. and Agnes M. Dehetre Baumann.

After her father died shortly after her birth, her mother married Joseph J. Baumann, whom she considered her father.

She was educated in Lisbon schools and graduated from the University of Maine.

On Aug. 4, 1951, she married William R. Gordon in Lisbon Falls.

For many years she taught elementary school in rural schools throughout Maine.

After retiring from teaching in 1993 she began working for L.L. Bean until she retired in 2008.

An avid reader and lifelong learner, she also co-owned a bookshop with her late husband, William.

Her other major passion was cooking and she enjoyed refining traditional Maine recipes.

At her request, there will be a private memorial service at a later date.

She was predeceased by her husband, William R. Gordon, on March 16, 1993; three sisters, Frances H. Turner of Lisbon, Gladys H. Desjardins and Elizabeth A. Pope, both of Brunswick, and her brother, Leon J. Baumann, of Lisbon Falls.

Surviving are her son, Dr. William R. Gordon, Jr., and his wife Heather M. Gordon of Wakefield, R.I., and her daughter, Martha A. Gordon of Brunswick; three grandchildren, Bronwyn L. Gordon Quinlan and her husband Mark G. Quinlan of North Providence, R.I., Ian W. Gordon of Wakefield, R.I., and Meredith A. Gordon of Brunswick; a sister, Lorraine R. Sherwood, of Brunswick, and a brother, Joseph E. Baumann, of Glen Gardner, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews.

At her request, there will be a private memorial service at a later date.

Arrangements are by Brackett Funeral Home, 29 Federal Street, Brunswick.
