CAPE ELIZABETH — Marie E. Nathan, 90, of Cape Elizabeth, died Feb. 7, at Piper Shores in Scarborough.

She was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on May 21, 1925, the daughter of Frederick and Ella McCernan. She married B. Emmett Nathan on Sept. 10, 1949. The couple moved to Maine in 1986, and lived in Cape Elizabeth for 22 years. Nathan moved to Piper Shores in Cape Elizabeth following the death of her husband in 2010.

Nathan was raised in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and began her business career at Bell Laboratories in New York in 1942, and moved to Wall Street one year later as an executive secretary in a brokerage firm. She later was the secretary to the chief executive officer of New Jersey’s largest outdoor advertising firm and worked as a personal assistant to a business and civic leader in New Jersey. This included a successful and long-term career raising money in the development office of Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey.

After moving to Maine, Nathan volunteered in the gift shop at Maine Medical Center and joined the Women’s Board of the Maine General Hospital, for which she was elected vice president.

An active golfer, Nathan was a member of the Purpoodock Golf Club in Cape Elizabeth and Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport. For several years, she served as Purpoodock representative to the Women’s Maine State Golf Association.

She is survived by a sister, Edith Cordes, of La Mesa, California; a sister-in-law, Eva Nathan, of Morton, Illinois; and nieces and nephews.
