SOUTH PORTLAND — Margaret “Peggy” (Sprague) Meserve, 59, died at home surrounded by her family on March 25 after a brief illness.

Born July 6, 1951, in Portland, she was the only child of Robert and Bertha Sprague.

After she graduated from South Portland High School in 1969, she attended Saint Francis College in Biddeford and received her bachelor’s degree in 1973.
 
In 1987 she earned a master’s degree in early childhood education from the University of Maine. 

Along with her husband Barry, she was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Scarborough.

Committed to giving back to the community, she volunteered over 1,200 hours at Maine Medical Center in Portland. 

Her love of literature, the arts, and the outdoors permeated all aspects of her life.

She had a lifelong love for animals, and adopted all kinds of pets over the years,  including an alligator, hedgehog,  possum, skunk, as well as numerous cats and dogs. 

Her aunt, Eva Taylor, and her father-in-law, Edward Meserve, predeceased her.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, Barry E. Meserve, Sr.; her parents, Robert and Bertha Sprague of Scarborough; four children, Catherine King, husband Anthony, and children, Richard and Robyn of Berwick; Barry Meserve, Jr., wife Jennifer, and children, Kaylee and Ian of Millinocket; Jay Meserve, wife Stephanie, and son Dawson of Scarborough;  and Bobbi Coffin and husband Corey of Dover, N.H. 

Memorial services were held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
