No matter your sport, the winter of 2013-14 delivered.

While basketball produced the most glory, Cheverus managed to sweep the Class A swimming championships, making history in the process. Several swimmers from other city schools also dazzled.

There was more greatness on the slopes, trails, track and wrestling mat as well and both boys’ and girls’ hockey produced some moments to remember.

Here’s one last look back at a winter that wouldn’t end and for sports fans, that was OK by us.

5) Two boys’ hockey squads make playoffs

Cheverus and the Deering/Portland co-op team both managed to take part in the boys’ hockey playoffs this winter. The Stags were one of the stronger teams for much of the regular season, but slipped to the No. 5 seed after going 9-8-1. Cheverus had to travel to No. 4 Noble/Wells, which proved to be much better than its upstart status suggested, and the Stags were ousted in the quarterfinals, 4-3. Portland/Deering went into the playoffs ranked seventh and gave No. 2 Scarborough a scare in the quarterfinals, but the Red Storm managed to win, 4-2, and ended Portland/Deering’s season at 6-12-1.

4) Waynflete girls’ hockey players make mark

A small contingent of Waynflete players helped the Capeflete girls’ hockey team enjoy its best season to date this winter. After winning just four times in 2012-13, Capeflete exceeded that total by Jan. 11 and went on to post a winning mark (10-8) for the first time. The season of firsts continued in the West Region quarterfinals, when Capeflete downed York, 4-0, for its first playoff victory. The run ended in the semifinals with an 11-1 loss to eventual state champion Scarborough, but there was no reason for Capeflete (which finished 11-9) to hang its head. The program put itself on the map and is well positioned for further success next season.

3) Indoor track stars shine

At the Class A state indoor track and field meet Feb. 17, Cheverus’ boys came in second as a team, as Jake Dixon (200) and Isaac Yeboah (55 hurdles) both won individual titles. The Stags girls were second as well, as Kiera Murray (two-mile) and Meredith Willard (55) won individual honors. Cheverus’ girls posted their finest finish to date and both teams will be primed for more excellence next winter.

2) Strong skiing showings

The city of Portland isn’t generally synonymous with excellence in Alpine or Nordic skiing, but this winter, local schools produced an inordinate share of champions. Nordic crowns were handed out first and Portland’s’ Lizzie Landry was the girls’ champion of the classical race in Class A. Landry was also third in the freestyle, while teammate Laura Frank was second in the freestyle and placed fifth in the classical. Portland’s Ben Allen wasn’t able to win a crown on the boys’ side, but he did come in second in the classical and third in the freestyle. Waynflete’s Louis Frumer had no peer in Class C in the downhill races, as he captured both the slalom and giant slalom.

1) Cheverus swimming makes history

Last winter, the Cheverus boys’ swim team won its first Class A title and this time around, the Stags managed to repeat. With company, as the girls won their first championship. In the boys’ meet, Cheverus won both the 200 (Jacob Griffin, Walker Church, Tim Jerome, Michael O’Donovan) and 400 (Griffin, Kevin Kane, John Devine, O’Donovan) freestyle relays. The girls were spurred to victory by a first-place medley relay (Abby Longstaff, Sarah Nappo, Gabrielle Cholish, Hattie Train) and by Nappo, who won the backstroke. Coach Kevin Haley has established both Stags teams as juggernauts and they’ll make a stab at more glory next season.
