SOUTH PORTLAND — First responders were unable to save the life of an 84-year-old South Portland man police say jumped from the Casco Bay Bridge Friday afternoon.

The man’s name is being withheld out of respect for his family, according to Det. Sgt. Christopher Todd.

At 12:29 p.m., a concerned passerby called the South Portland Police after watching a man climb over the security fence and stand on the outer ledge of the bridge on the South Portland side of the walkway, according to a media release from South Portland Police.

When first responders arrived at the scene, they witnessed the man jump to the rocks below the bridge. Medical personnel attempted to save the man’s life, but he was deceased on their arrival, said the release.
