PORTLAND — A new open-road tolling facility opened Tuesday at Maine Turnpike Exit 44 in Scarborough.
The $17.5 million project began in the spring of 2017. It allows vehicles equipped with E-ZPass to cruise through at highway speeds while sensors collect the toll electronically. Drivers may still pay cash by pulling to the right for staffed toll booths.
The Maine Turnpike Authority also announced detours for the week of June 17, for demolition of the old facility on Interstate 295.
From June 17-19, MTA plans to close Exit 44 from 7 p.m.-5 a.m., and from 8 p.m.-5 a.m. on Thursday, June 20.
During the closures, northbound Interstate 95 traffic will be directed to continue on I-95 to Exit 45 in South Portland, which is the connector to U.S. Route 1, and then east to the I-295 northbound ramp.
Southbound I-295 traffic will be directed to Exit 1 for I-95.
