CATHERINE REID, Junior—Basketball

* SMAA Class AA All-Star, second-team

Reid is a gamer, a winner and a tenacious competitor who did a little of everything for a Lions squad that exceeded expectations this winter.

Reid started playing basketball in the third grade and it quickly became her top sport.

“I like the fast pace and the closeness with my teammates,” Reid said. “I like to win, but having fun is most important.”

Reid, who also plays soccer and lacrosse at MGA, stepped right in and made an impact with the Lions basketball team as a freshman, seeing a lot of playing time on a squad which got to the regional semifinals. As a sophomore, Reid scored and set up her teammates with regularity and MGA made a surprise run to the semifinals.

This winter, the Lions won their first nine game and went on to an unexpected 13-win campaign. Reid averaged a dozen points per game to lead the team, tallied six rebounds per contest, despite being far from the tallest player on the floor (5-foot-3), tied for fourth in the league with 3.8 assists per game and finished fifth in steals per contest (3.4).

Highlights included 15 points in a win over Sanford, 21 in a victory over Bonny Eagle, 19 in a win at Windham, 15 points, nine rebounds and four steals in a victory over Thornton Academy, 18 points in a win over Massabesic and 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists in a season-ending loss to two-time defending champion Gorham in the Class AA South quarterfinals.

Reid, who plays AAU ball with the Firecrackers and is a member of MGA’s Mock Trial, hopes to win more games next season and get to the Cross Insurance Arena for the semifinals after the Lions fell short this season.

As long as Catherine Reid, Maine Girls’ Academy’s Winter Athlete of the Year, is leading the way, the Lions figure to be in very good hands.

Coach Billy Goodman’s comment: “Catherine is amazing. I’m extremely lucky to coach her. She does everything I ask. She gives everything she’s got. She was our rock all season.”
