SCARBOROUGH — Maine Audubon reports several pairs of piping plovers have returned to southern Maine beaches, and reminds beach goers not to encroach on the endangered birds’ nesting areas.
There were 44 nesting pairs on Maine beaches last year, according to Audubon, which hopes ensure the birds’ protection and increase the population as part of the Piping Plover Recovery Project, a collaboration of several state and national wildlife services.
Plovers typically nest in sand dunes on the upper part of beaches. The Town Council is still revising an animal control ordinance governing dogs on Higgins, Ferry, Western and Pine Point Beaches to better protect the piping plover population.
Maine Audubon suggests contacting the town office for further clarification on the current beach restrictions during plover nesting season.
