BATH — After five years as director of the Main Street Bath organization, and many more as a board member, Jennifer Geiger has resigned to do public relations and communications at the Maine Office of Tourism.

The job change “was professional development for me, an opportunity to grow in my field,” the Arrowsic woman said last week.

Prior to becoming the Main Street Bath’s director, Geiger, who has also served on the Bath Rotary Club and the board of the Southern Midcoast Maine Chamber, spent 12 years as an account manager with Briggs Advertising. She served on the promotions committee of the Bath Business Association (Main Street Bath’s predecessor) in the 1990s, and became its chairwoman in 2008.

“I really liked the organization, I liked their mission, I liked the people, I liked Bath,” she said.

Three years into Geiger’s time as director, Main Street Bath was one of five organizations across the country to receive the 2012 Great American Main Street Award. The American Planning Association had previously named Bath’s Front Street one of 10 “Great Streets of 2009,” for showcasing the character and planning that go into communities of rich and lasting value.

But her pride in the organization and the city goes far beyond those accolades.

“The high point is having the collaborations, working with so many people toward a common goal, and then seeing that work pay off,” Geiger said, noting that about 400 volunteers help out throughout the year on a variety of events, including Heritage Days.

“That’s the most rewarding thing, for me,” Geiger said. “… Seeing Bath’s successes and knowing that we put in this effort, and we worked together. When I see Bath on a day like today – the flowers are blooming, the flags are flying, people are walking on the streets, and I see a downtown that’s alive and contributing to community life – that’s the reward.”

Geiger resigned at Main Street Bath on July 11. Prospective replacements may apply online by July 25 at visitbath.com.
