SOUTH PORTLAND — The city is the best place to live in Maine, according to Money magazine.

The magazine’s online compilation of “The Best Places to Live in Every State” said “Maine’s ‘most invisible city,’ as some residents call it, has a bustling food and bar scene and a thriving economy of its own, with an affordable cost of living relative to the rest of the state and country.”

It also noted the city “doesn’t need to depend on Portland to flourish,” although the proximity to Portland makes South Portland an even more attractive place to live for its nearly 26,000 residents.

The results were based on data from Money’s annual “Best Places to Live in the U.S.,” and considered everything from the cost of buying a home to median household income. In South Portland, the magazine said the median home cost was nearly $356,000 in 2018, and the median household income was nearly $56,500.
