CAPE ELIZABETH — Mary Kathleen Carol Hoppel, 75, died Aug. 24.

Hoppel was born and raised in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Growing up in Quebec, she spoke French but was also fluent in English. She was very proud of her French-Canadian and Irish heritage.

She attended nursing school, and then relocated to Los Angeles, at a time when few young women moved far from their families. There, she worked as an operating room nurse at St. Vincent’s Hospital. She was known for her intelligence, attention to detail and devotion to her work.

Hoppel enjoyed daily crossword puzzles and Scrabble, and was an avid book-lover. She also enjoyed working on home construction projects, starting with a brick patio she and her husband built for their house in Yorba Linda, California. More recently, the couple enjoyed renovating their home in Cape Elizabeth.

Kathleen is survived by her husband of 47 years, Ronald William Hoppel; her daughter, Natalie Kathleen Hoppel; a brother, nephew, niece, many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

At the family’s request, services will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Nurses Foundation or to The Canadian Irish Studies Foundation.
