BATH — Ludger Masse, 78, died Feb. 28 at MidCoast Hospital.

Masse was born April 16, 1933, in Brunswick to Lorenzo and Liane Ouellette Masse. He was an outgoing and lively man who imparted a strong impression on everyone who had the pleasure to meet him.

He graduated from Brunswick High School in 1953 and married the love of his life, Patricia Livernois, on Oct. 5, 1957.

A hardworking man, he passed these values on to all of his children. Masse spent a few years in the U.S. Army serving in Germany, then spent more than 20 years building houses in the Brunswick/Topsham area. He later worked as a tinsmith at Bath Iron Works for 18 year before he retired.

He was a lover of all sports, especially baseball, and was active in the community as a baseball coach for many years. A die hard fan of all New England teams, he was almost never seen without one of his many baseball caps in support of his favorite teams. He also enjoyed gardening, making jam, maple syrup and root beer, canning, hunting, fishing and anything else involving the outdoors.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia Masse; six children, Dennis and his wife, Kelly, Shawn and his wife, Debra, Rick and his wife, Brenda, Tim, Jim and Steve and his wife, Rachel; sisters Jeannine Messier and Celeste Perkins; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours were held March 5 at the Demers-Desmond Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John’s Church on March 6.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society at One Bowdoin Mill Island, Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
