CUMBERLAND — Louis V. Zambello Jr., 76, died Oct. 30 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House after living with prostate cancer for the last seven years.

Born on Oct. 6, 1933, in East Boston, he was the youngest of five children of Italian immigrants, Antonetta Sarno and Luigi Zambello.

He was fiercely proud of his Italian heritage, and took four trips to Italy, where he loved communicating in his limited Italian with “la famiglia.”

In 1951 he graduated from Somerville High School and attended Colby College on a basketball scholarship.

He maintained a life-long connection to Colby as an active fundraiser, president of his reunion classes, mentor to student athletes and most recently, established a scholarship fund for Maine athletes. Colby honored him in October 2008 with their C Club Man of the Year award.

Upon graduating from Colby College in 1955 he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force based out of Otis Air Force Base.

Following his discharge from the Air Force, he had a long career in sales and sales management and worked for Kimberly Clark Corporation, Spalding Sports Worldwide, and lastly, Reebok companies, Avia and Rockport Shoes.

After spending summers on Damariscotta Lake, where he was active on the board of the Damariscotta Lake Watershed Association, he and his wife decided to move from their longtime residence in Amherst, Mass., to Maine in 2004.

He was an active supporter and fundraiser for the Casco Bay YMCA Adaptive Services and the Sudanese group, ASERELA, and felt privileged to be part of the Acholi community.

A huge fan of Greely athletics, he enjoyed following the sporting events of his five local grandchildren. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Falmouth Country Club.

He loved music of all kinds, especially Puccini opera and would often attend concerts at Berklee College of Music with his son conducting.
His other interests included skiing and following Boston sports.

He will be remembered for his overflowing love for his family, keen sense of humor, generous spirit and artistic flair.

He was predeceased by his brothers Charles and Anthony Zambello.

Survivors include two sisters, Agnes Duffy and Marianna Sundin, both of California; his wife of 53 years, Kathleen (McConaughy) Zambello of Cumberland Foreside; his son Louis V Zambello III, of Cumberland Center, his wife Lindsey Rustad and their children, Erika, Mary, and Louis Gwynn; his son Kenneth Zambello of North Reading, Mass., his wife Debra and their daughter Madelyn; and his daughter Gwenne Oberg of Cumberland Foreside, her husband Kerry and their children, Matti and Nina

His funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 14, at Holy Martyrs Church, 266 Foreside Road, Falmouth.

Family and friends are welcome to join a celebration of life following the funeral at the Oberg home at 27 Stony Ridge Road, Cumberland Foreside, for food, music, joy and laughter.
