CAPE ELIZABETH — Lorne Parent Jr., 83, died Sept. 11 at St. Andre Nursing Facility in Biddeford.

He was born in Van Buren, the son of Lorne Parent Sr. and Yvonne Guerrette. He attended school in Van Buren and St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers, Massachusetts. He graduated from Ricker College in Houlton with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Parent served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1955 and was honorably discharged. His career experience included managing the family business, Parent Brothers, as well as working for himself as a Mobil Oil distributor and owner of a local retail store. He was the president of the Van Buren Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Rotary Club, post commander of the local American Legion and a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus.

In 1983, Parent moved his family to the Portland area, where he was employed in various capacities. He was a communicant of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church in Cape Elizabeth, and served as eucharistic minister there for many years. He was also very active in Charismatic Renewal, and participated in the State of Maine Charismatic Service Committee for five years.

Parent is predeceased by a sister, Ruth, and a grandson, Josh.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ancilla; four children and their spouses,  Lorna and Fletcher Missud, Donna Betts, Jennifer and Eric Giguere, and Doug and Annette Parent; 10 grandchildren; brother, James Parent, and wife Loretta Grimm of Hampton, New Hampshire; and sister, Marlene Beaghen, of Charlotte, North Carolina.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Sept. 16 at St. Bartholomew Church, in Cape Elizabeth. Burial was scheduled to follow at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Augusta.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Family Hope, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the families of people living with mental illness in Maine, at P.O. Box 1385, Scarborough, ME 04070-1385.
