PORTLAND — Longfellow Elementary School is one of three schools in Maine to be nominated by the state Department of Education as a 2013 National Blue Ribbon School.
The National Blue Ribbon School program is an honor bestowed by the U.S. Department of Education to recognize public and private schools whose students achieve at a very high level or have made significant progress and closed gaps in achievement, especially among disadvantaged and minority students.
Longfellow joins Williams-Cone Elementary School in Topsham and Yarmouth Elementary School as a nominee. The three schools have student achievement in the top 15 percent in Maine for both reading and math.
The U.S. Department of Education will announce the winners in September 2013.
