SCARBOROUGH — Lois Howard Nicholls, 92, died June 5 at the Holbrook Health Center at Piper Shores.

Born in Hartford, Conn., to Harry Herbert and Ruth Garrette Howard, she graduated from New Britain High School and Hartford School of Fine and Applied Arts.

For 53 years she was married to Raymond Nicholls, and after his death in 1995 she moved to Piper Shores Retirement Community as one of its first residents.

A lifelong artist, she created works in watercolor, sculpture, wood block printing, fabric and floral arts.

While living in Connecticut, she also worked for several years in local elementary schools.

She was involved in Girl Scouts from childhood, and served as a Girl Scout troop leader for many years, where she developed a co-ed cycling and camping program for Connecticut scouting troops.

An active churchgoer, she was a charter member of the Newington United Methodist Church in Connecticut and later was active in the United Church of Christ.

A passion for gardening, she was involved in the Broad Cove Garden Club in Cape Elizabeth, and Longfellow Garden Club in Portland.

Surviving are her two daughters, Nancy Wulf and husband Ambassador Norman Wulf of Fairfax, Va., and Bev Thayer of Cape Elizabeth; four grandchildren, Dr. Eric Wulf and wife Jennifer Headley of Arlington, Va., Christina Wulf of Harrisonburg, Va., Kevin Flynn of Morrison, Colo., Abby Flynn of Cape Elizabeth, and one great-grandson, Wyatt Stillings of Cape Elizabeth.

There will be a private memorial service and interment at Riverside Cemetery in Cape Elizabeth.
