The first week of 2010 high school sports action was full of memorable moments.

Boys’ basketball

The Brunswick boys’ basketball team took a 10-0 record (and the No. 2 spot in the latest Eastern Class A Heal Points standings behind Brewer) into Tuesday night’s home game against defending regional champion Edward Little. Last week, the Dragons defeated host Cony (65-62, in OT), Oxford Hills (45-40) and Mt. Ararat (53-46). Against the Eagles, senior Rashon Edgerton scored 21 points to help Brunswick rally from a halftime deficit. The Dragons were at Erskine Thursday, host Messalonskee Saturday and welcome Erskine Monday.

Mt. Ararat bounced back from its Brunswick loss and improved to 5-6 with a 55-45 home win over Lewiston Monday. Junior Josh Walker led the way with 17 points.

“I’m proud of the way that our kids worked hard and executed in fourth quarter,” said Eagles coach Aaron Watson. “A couple guys finally started to shoot the way I know they can.”

The Eagles (eighth in Eastern A) went to Cony Tuesday and host Skowhegan Friday.

Morse is 2-8 and 11th in the region. The Shipbuilders won 58-44 over visiting Mt. Ararat last Thursday, then fell 59-57 at Oxford Hills Saturday. After hosting Lewiston Tuesday and Edward Little Thursday, Morse welcomes Lawrence Friday night.

In Western D, Hyde is 3-3 and 10th in the Heals after a pair of victories last weekend: 53-25 at Gould and 73-29 at Sacopee. The Phoenix went to Rangeley Wednesday, host Valley Friday and go to Kents Hill next Wednesday.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, Brunswick, Morse and Mt. Ararat are all in the top six of the Eastern A Heals.

The Dragons beat Cony 40-32 and Oxford Hills 49-45, then dropped a 35-23 decision at Mt. Ararat to fall to 7-3 (good for fourth in the standings). Brunswick was at Edward Little Tuesday and hosted Erskine Thursday, welcomes Messalonskee Saturday and visits  Erskine Monday.

The Eagles are 7-4, third in Eastern A and riding a three-game win streak after downing Morse (53-38), Brunswick (35-23) and Lewiston (49-27). Mt. Ararat hosted Cony Tuesday and goes to Skowhegan Friday.

The Shipbuilders have lost three straight and are 7-4 (sixth in the Heals). Morse fell 53-38 to Mt. Ararat, 43-40 to Oxford Hills and 57-48 at Edward Little. The Shipbuilders played at Lewiston Tuesday and host Lawrence Friday.

In Western D, Hyde is still seeking its first victory. Losses to Hebron (44-34) and Sacopee (31-25) dropped the Phoenix to 0-6 (and 15th in the Heals). Hyde went to Rangeley Wednesday, welcomes Valley Friday and plays at Kents Hill Monday.

Hockey

On the ice, the Brunswick boys suffered a 5-4 overtime loss to Scarborough Monday to fall to 4-3 (eighth in Eastern A). The Dragons hosted Lewiston Thursday, go to Edward Little Saturday and visit Cony Monday.

Mt. Ararat sandwiched losses to Skowhegan (4-2) and Edward Little (10-2) around a 6-2 triumph over Windham. The Eagles are now 2-6 and 12th in Eastern A. They visited Edward Little Wednesday, go to Massabesic Saturday and host Sanford Monday.

The Brunswick girls are 3-10-1 and sixth in the East Region after downing Yarmouth 3-0 Saturday. The Dragons hosted Lewiston Thursday, welcome Greely Saturday and visit Leavitt Monday.

Indoor track

Brunswick senior standout Will Geoghegan won the two-mile at the Dartmouth (N.H.) Relays last weekend, with a time of 9 minutes, 18.70 seconds.

In KVAC track action last weekend, the Brunswick boys defeated Bangor, Edward Little, Hermon, Brewer, Hampden and MDI to win its meet. The Dragons girls came in third. Mt. Ararat’s boys were second behind Lewiston in a meet which also included Belfast and Gardiner. The Eagles were also second in the girls’ meet.

This coming weekend, Brunswick and Mt. Ararat square off against each other, as well as Erskine, Lawrence, Mt. Blue, MCI, Mt. View, Skowhegan and Winslow.

Swimming

In the pool, Morse is coming off boys’ and girls’ wins last weekend against Edward Little and Hyde.

Tuesday night, the Brunswick girls beat Gardiner, 114-58, while the Mt. Ararat girls beat Gardiner, 111-64.

Wrestling

On the mat, the Morse wrestling team dominated Lincoln Academy, 75-6, in its latest meet. Mt. Ararat was busy over the weekend, defeating MCI (47-28), Lincoln Academy (63-12), Skowhegan (39-35) and Windham (62-12), while losing to Cony (42-38).
