The 2009 portion of the winter sports season arrived with a flourish, bringing rivalry games on the hardwood and encouraging results in other sports.
SUBHEAD-Boys’ basketball
On the hardwood, Morse, Brunswick and Mt. Ararat have all done battle with each other in recent days.
The Shipbuilders remain the top local team, but they fell 53-47 to visiting Mt. Ararat Tuesday to fall to 7-2 on the season. The win elevated the Eagles to 5-4. Mt. Ararat took a commanding 16-3 lead after one period and held on down the stretch behind 19 points from Cam Vermette and 10 from Tyler Toothaker. Morse was paced by 20 from Ryan Chaney and 16 from Alex Kee.
The Shipbuilders (who had won 57-54 at Edward Little the previous time out) were at Leavitt Thursday (too late for this edition). Saturday, Morse (tied for third in the initial Eastern A Heal Points standings) hosts Oxford Hills. Tuesday, it’s at Lewiston.
The Eagles (who had fallen 46-42 at Brunswick in their prior outing, due largely to poor foul shooting) went to Edward Little Thursday. Mt. Ararat (seventh in Eastern A) plays host to Lewiston Saturday and Oxford Hills Tuesday.
The Dragons’ win over Mt. Ararat evened their record, but Tuesday, Brunswick lost 57-46 to visiting Cony to fall to 4-5 on the year. The Dragons (10th in Eastern A) were at Oxford Hills Thursday, host Leavitt Saturday and play at Edward Little Tuesday.
Hyde (2-1 and 10th in the Western C Heals) returned to action Wednesday (too late for this edition) when it hosted Hebron. The Phoenix are at North Yarmouth Academy Saturday and play host to Rangeley Tuesday.
SUBHEAD-Girls’ basketball
On the girls’ side, Brunswick continues to dazzle. Saturday, the Dragons dispatched visiting Mt. Ararat 49-29 and Tuesday, Brunswick improved to 8-1 with a 45-31 win at Cony. The victory was the Dragons’ first over the Rams since 1986. Brunswick (first in the initial Eastern A Heals) hosted Oxford Hills Thursday (too late for this edition), visits Leavitt Saturday and plays host to Edward Little Tuesday.
Also Tuesday, Mt. Ararat bounced back from its Brunswick loss and held off visiting Morse 30-29 to improve to 4-5. The Shipbuilders (who fell 42-27 to visiting Edward Little last Saturday) dropped to 0-9.
The Eagles (tied for 10th in the Eastern A Heals) were home with Edward Little Thursday, visit Lewiston Saturday and host Oxford Hills Tuesday. Morse (14th in Eastern A) was home with Leavitt Thursday, goes to Oxford Hills Saturday and plays host to Lewiston Tuesday.
In Western C, Hyde (2-0 and 11th in the Heals) returns to action Saturday against visiting Hebron. Rangeley pays a visit Tuesday.
SUBHEAD-Hockey
On the ice, Brunswick has bounced back from three season-opening losses with a three-game win streak. The Dragons edged visiting Winthrop 2-1 Saturday, then erupted for their biggest offensive production of the season Monday in an 8-3 home victory over Edward Little. Wednesday’s scheduled game at Cony was postponed 24 hours due to bad weather. Saturday, Brunswick (seventh in the initial Eastern A Heals) is at Lawrence.
Mt. Ararat lost 5-0 at Cony Saturday and was blanked 10-0 by visiting Waterville Tuesday to fall to 0-5-1 on the year. The Eagles (12th in the Eastern A Heals) welcome Edward Little Monday.
The Brunswick girls fell to 0-10 Monday with a 12-0 home loss to Lewiston. The Dragons (eighth in the East Region Heals) are idle until next Thursday when they host Leavitt.
SUBHEAD-Indoor track
Both Brunswick indoor track teams enjoyed victories last weekend. The boys beat seven other teams, the girls downed nine foes. The boys swept all three relays. Matt Hatke won the junior 55, 200 and high jump. In the girls’ meet, Kristin Slotnick took three events (the 200, 400 and long jump).
Mt. Ararat was second to Edward Little on both the boys’ and girls’ sides. McKenzie Gary (junior 200 and long jump) and Tim Bickford (senior high jump and triple jump) were multiple event winners for the boys. In the girls’ meet, Rebecca Merritt won the 55 and 200. The Eagles also took the 800 and 3,200 relays.
SUBHEAD-Swimming
In the pool, Brunswick swept meets with Lincoln and Wiscasset Tuesday. The boys downed Lincoln 63-22 and beat Wiscasset 49-35. The girls were 48-43 victors over Lincoln and 74-8 winners over Wiscasset.
Mt. Ararat faced the same teams. The Eagles’ boys defeated Lincoln 61-27 and Wiscasset 51-35. The girls tied Lincoln 45-45 and downed Wiscasset 72-8.
SUBHEAD-Wrestling
On the mat, Mt. Ararat came in sixth out of 34 teams at the recent Noble Invitational. Saturday, the Eagles defeated Kennebunk (53-18) and Nokomis (61-18) and lost to Skowhegan (40-36).
Morse was 13th at the Noble Invitational. Saturday, the Shipbuilders were 51-21 winners over Mt. Blue and 69-12 victors over Portland.
