PORTLAND — Fundraising for the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland could become more visible with the introduction of a specialty license plate.

The Maine Secretary of State has approved the design of the plate, a collaboration between the hospital and Joe and Kim Westrich, who credit hospital staff with saving their daughter’s life.

In order to present the license plate for approval by the Legislature, 2,000 residents with active vehicle registrations must sign up to get the plate by Sept. 1. The fee is $25, and the public can sign up online at bbch.org/licenseplate.

Once approved, those who signed up will receive the plate. Each plate sale and renewal will generate $10 for the hospital.
