I urge my fellow South Portland residents to vote for the marijuana ordinance. Adults should be allowed to use marijuana in the privacy of their homes, if they so choose. We as a society have said it is acceptable to use alcohol, so why not marijuana, a safer substance? Public use would remain illegal, so you won’t see people walking down the street smoking a joint. Law enforcement has more serious issues to deal with than adults possessing marijuana.

Marijuana prohibition, just like alcohol prohibition, has been a failure. It has done nothing to stop the flow of marijuana into our community. We have the opportunity to implement a smarter marijuana policy, one that will make South Portland safer. Please join me in voting for the ordinance on Nov. 4.
